Sudan has announced that they are proceeding with legislative efforts to outlaw Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). FGM is the practice of partial or total removal of some or all of the external parts of the female genitalia or other injury to it for non-medical reasons.
The FGM amendment to the criminal law was approved on 22 April. Under the amendment, anyone who performs FGM either inside a medical establishment or elsewhere faces three years’ imprisonment and a fine.
This is a step forward by Sudan that will ensure the protection of the countless females subjected to this practise.
