Snapshot: Depleting the environment is a small price to pay for oil-giant BP

Oil-giant BP has been fined just £7,000 for the 95 tonnes of crude oil leaked into the North Sea on the 2ndOctober 2016. BP had pleaded guilty to contravening rules on the regulation of offshore petroleum activities in Aberdeen Sheriff Court after an investigation undertaken by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy found that an inadequate written procedure led to the significant leak. Despite concerns for the environment being more prevalent than ever, it’s evident that the courts are still hesitant to take a harder stance against multinational companies that fail to respect environmental standards. It leads us to wonder how many oil spills it will take for the courts to impose fines that actually act as a deterrent, rather than fines which barely dent a day’s profit.
