Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick announced the extension of the business evictions ban to March 2021 to protect business owners who have been badly affected by the pandemic. This opens up a window for negotiations between commercial landlords and their tenants to settle disputes on unpaid rent. Additionally, the Corporate Insolvency and Governance Act introduced as a temporary measure that limits the use of statutory demands and winding-up petitions have been extended to be in place until 31 March 2021. With the current economic circumstances being so unstable, businesses need to be supported and protected as the government sets up measures to ensure this.
A package of over £280 billion has been committed by the government to support businesses and their employees through self-employed and furlough schemes (£52 million) and in loans (£66 million) for example. In the legal aspect, commercial landlord and tenant legislation are due for review in 2021 to consider the impacts of Coronavirus on businesses.
