Is Smiling the Key to Increasing Happiness?

A ground-breaking study has revealed that the action of moving the facial muscles to smile tricks the mind into contentment: ‘the happiness formula’. Moving the facial muscles triggers the amygdala, which generates positive emotions.

This study is important, considering that on average adults only smile 20 times per day, in comparison to children who smile around 500 times.

Considering that for many of us the pandemic has intensified feelings of uncertainty and loneliness, should smiling be made part of our self-care routines? Will this technique be used in therapy sessions from now on?
