The chariot unearthed from the Civita Giuliana Excavation has not only challenged what is known about the ancient world but digging a little deeper, a more interesting picture emerges.
The dig has always had two purposes. The first reveals the constant threat faced by any archaeological site – theft. The dig was organised in cooperation with the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Torre Annuziata to prevent the looting of cultural heritage via tunnels which has been taking place in the area. This dig has therefore allowed the prosecutors to verify the extent of the illegal tunnels and the damage caused by the thieves.
The chariot itself comes from the second purpose of the dig which was to reveal one of the most significant villas in the Vesuvian area. This story teaches us that its amazing what you can find when you dig a little deeper.
