A Sea of Toppling Statues?

A recent Sky News report has detailed that since the toppling of the Edward Colston statue in Bristol in the heady heat of summer 2020, a quarter of controversial statues have been removed or are under review.

What’s striking about the report, which Sky News conducted by contacting 44 councils in England, Wales and Scotland, is that it sits awkwardly with the government’s intentions of setting up a process for councils to follow if they wanted a statue to be removed. The relative ease with which the Sky News report details some of these statues being removed is in stark contrast to the strict ringfencing which the government has been advocating.

Crucially though, this report is denotive of a much broader conversation occurring within society about how we wish to remember our past and whose stories we should continue to tell.
